My inspiration for this piece came when I was driving along a very fire affected road here on the South Coast. Only 2 months before it had been ravaged by bushfires, and on that day- I marveled at how green it had become already. Beautiful lush growth was sprouting from the blackened bellies of Gumtrees for miles. My heart was so full at how our Australian natives manage to flourish after fire, I wanted to capture the essence of that resilience.
Then, when the world turned crazy - this piece got put aside whilst we adjusted to life in isolation, the progress was slow but i enjoyed painting with less urgency (as it no longer needed to be finished for a group exhibition).
I laid it out on the floor and experimented with alcohol spray and thinned acrylic paint, watching the patterns appear and change form with a life of its own. My daughter sat alongside me and painted parts of this- and for this reason, the painting became more “home” than ever.
